BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING: THE NEXT BIG THING?

"Several weeks ago I read an awesome story from a previous podcast guest. You might know her if you watch a little tv station called ESPN. The guest, Stephania Bell, told us about her upcoming baseball spring training tour and then she mentioned blood flow restriction training (click here if you want need a refresher). I already had an idea about blood flow restriction training (BFR from now on because I don’t feel like typing it out every time!) from this article written by Stephania. Naturally, I had to ask her about BFR and the article. She summarized it well and mentioned “you need to talk to Johnny Owens.” So I reached out to Johnny and he agreed to be a guest on the Therapy Insiders podcast (which is below). Johnny is a smart guy that is excited about the potential of BFR and rightfully so based on the success he has had thus far with it. I don’t blame him. If you could improve the rehabilitation process for a lot of people while minimizing overall stress on their body, wouldn’t you? Yea, me too. Now a lot of you are probably asking right now how does blood flow occlusion training work? What is the science behind this? Who is this Johnny character? Can I try this out? Is he really going to keep asking questions for the rest of this blog? Well the answers to all those questions and more is in the podcast. So get your tourniquets ready (please don’t) and enjoy the podcast on blood occlusion training! BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING AND PHYSICAL THERAPY

January 21, 2015: Improving strength is a typical component of physical rehabilitation after injury. But often standing in the way of all the muscle building necessary to recover from an injury is the injury itself. While working at Brooke Army Medical Center, physical therapist Johnny Owens, PT, MPT, saw wounded warriors who needed to improve strength in injured limbs without further compromising vulnerable joints or soft tissue. So he and his colleagues began experimenting with a relatively new treatment method that’s gaining in popularity: blood flow restriction training, or BFR. The technique, which involves applying a tourniquet to an injured limb to partially restrict blood flow, allows patients to make greater strength gains while lifting lighter loads, thereby reducing the overall stress placed on the limb. In this episode of Move Forward Radio, Johnny Owens, MPT, describes how blood flow restriction training works, shares his vision for the potential of the technique within health care, and discusses where research is ongoing.
